FLORAMANIA - Wandering Books 2020, story written and directed by Harri Harding & Nancy Denis

Welcome to Wandering Books!

WANDERING BOOKS is a creative program offered in public schools in South Western Sydney. It began as a collaboration between the Think+DO Tank's LOST IN BOOKS multilingual kids' bookshop and the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre. The pilot phase of the program was funded by the SSI Innovation Fund.

WANDERING BOOKS is now a proven model and it is available to new schools on a fee-for-service basis. It makes two offers to schools and the families connected to them. Firstly, we provide a informal social "lounge" at school for all families; and secondly, we offer a free creative program for newly arrived families. The social lounge is open for all parents and any younger siblings of school age children. It happens either just after school drop off, or before school ends for the day. We invite parents and younger kids to relax, read, play, socialise and grab a snack. There are staff on hand who can provide expert information and assistance. We offer books and newspapers in English and community languages, as well as space and time to read and relax.

WANDERING BOOKS' creative program offers a range of creative workshops for newly arrived parents/carers and their children throughout the school term. The workshops are an opportunity for you and your children to play in your first language and in English; and to bond through creative activities, such as textiles, puppetry, music and book illustration with leading artists. Refreshments are provided, and younger children are always welcome.

WANDERING BOOKS is currently being offered at Liverpool Public School on Tuesday afternoons from 2.30pm with the financial support of Liverpool City Council. It has also been offered with success at Marsden Road Public, Liverpool West and Hoxton Park Public Schools.

EARTH: A Musical Story

Over the last seven weeks of term 2 2020, WANDERING BOOKS has been bringing “Earth” to life with music, and narration. The story was written by Nigerian writer, Ifeyinwa Okoroafor. She gifted it to the newly arrived students at Liverpool Public School. In collaboration with musician and composer, Harri Harding, they devised a musical soundtrack for this story, coupled with their skilful narration.
