Indigenous Literacy Day 2020

September 02, 2020 by Jane Stratton

Written by Eden

It’s a wonderful day to celebrate Indigenous Language and Literacy!

We’re excited to celebrate Australian First Nations Authors this Indigenous Literacy Day with these 9 inspiring reads.

Leading the Indigenous Literacy Day is the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), champions of raising literacy levels within remote Indigenous communities. Working through their Community Literacy Projects, ILF have worked with community members to publish books in many Aboriginal languages, empowering Indigenous people to share their stories. Interweaving their rich history and traditions into tales of fiction and non-fiction for readers of all ages, these books are a wonderful way through which we can learn more about the cultural heritage of our First Nations’ Peoples and celebrate their stories.

Partners in lifting the voices of marginalised communities, LOST IN BOOKS is proud to have a wide collection of Australian First Nations books in store. We celebrate ILF’s commitment to ensuring such books are put in the hands of children who can connect and see themselves in the stories unfolding on the pages.

We’ve created 3 groups of book recommendations, including:

  • ILF Early to Middle Reader books by young Australian First Nations Authors.

  • Young Adult Non-fiction full of own-voices Australian First Nations stories and a concise history and education on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.

  • Picture books for a new generation - on respect, a truer Australian history and a gentle story set in the rugged Australian bush.

There’s something for everyone and we’re sure you’ll find at least one book to add to your growing Australian First Nations TBR pile!

Don’t forget to visit the ILF website, packed with educational resources, information on their Community Literacy Projects and all the ways you can share in their vision of equal opportunity for all children across Australia, they are a national book industry charity making an incredible difference in remote Indigenous communities.

Now onto the books - let’s get reading!

AVAILABLE IN STORE AND ONLINE.
