LOST IN BOOKS is a multilingual kids’ bookshop.
LOST IN BOOKS’ Purpose
LOST IN BOOKS was established in 2017 by Think+DO Tank Foundation to:
maintain and transmit mother language(s)
enable curiosity about other language worlds
share and produce stories that reflect the full polyglot diversity of Australian society
celebrate Australian multilingualism, and
enable multilingual literacies of children and youth so that they can be fully-fledged citizens and participants in both English and their mother tongue.
LOST IN BOOKS Impact
Since 2017, LOST IN BOOKS has:
created a new safer public space for women, children and youth in South Western Sydney
established a new public creative hub and community house
enabled access to high-quality multilingual kids’ literature for at least 76,404 students in 110 schools throughout Australia
directly employed at least 39 local women with a refugee experience as Retail Assistants; Community Connectors; Site Managers; Interpreters; Bilingual Storytellers; Interpreters; Cleaning Staff; Hosts; and Program Assistants
funded residencies and artist development programs for 27 literary artists to make new bilingual works; 24 Storytellers to develop new bilingual material for live storytelling; and 8 musicians to make multilingual music
contributed to the payment of more than 224 artists across festivals, creative and public programming and schools outreach
contributed to the cost of operating Think+DO Tank’s Community House and its outreach work, TO YOUR DOOR
produced a digital TV channel, LOST IN BOOKS TV, that has generated more than 16,700 views of more than 430 hours of original, multilingual content since 2020
attracted more than 16,000 attendances in creative programming
provided 1900+ instances of direct assistance, including COVID assistance through the work of our Community Connectors, including our online Community Hub during the COVID crisis
referred more than 50 individuals with complex needs to relevant services.
LOST IN BOOKS is a social enterprise, a “business for good”.

Today is World Teachers’ Day. We take our hats off to teachers across the world for their dedication to sharing knowledge and sparking curiosity in those they educate.
We share our Wordless Book collection as a gift to the increasingly multilingual classrooms of Australian schools. Wordless Books democratise literature by enabling every reader to make their own story within the world of the book, regardless of shared language.
We offer NESA-accredited PD to assist educators to use creativity and multilingual strategies to engage learners and their imaginations.
And we have recently brought new shipments of books from Iran; from across the Arabic-speaking and Chinese-speaking worlds; and soon we will welcome new Vietnamese titles. LOST IN BOOKS celebrates the talent of Australian authors, illustrators and publishers and calls for our attention to remain on improving the extent to which our literature mirrors the diversity and languages spoken by children and young people who call Australia home.

Safdar Ahmed is an Illustrator, volunteer at the Refugee Art Project and valued Workshop Facilitator at Lost In Books. We are proud to be supporting the sale of zines on behalf of Safdar and Refugee Art Project.
LOST IN BOOKS is a COVID-Safe space and we are committed to keeping you safe. All our staff members, visitors and workshop participants are required to sign in and sanitise upon arrival, wear a mask while in our space, practice good hygiene and physical distancing.
LOST IN BOOKS and the Australian Children’s Laureate Foundation are proud to present an online storytelling of ‘Midnight At The Library’ by, critically-acclaimed author and Australian Children’s Laureate 2020-2021, Ursula Dubosarsky, recorded at our multilingual children’s bookshop in Fairfield.

Today, we celebrate The Brown Bookshop and its proud owner, Lorraine Woodhouse. Lorraine bought The Brown Bookshop 15 years ago to this very day - 11 February.
Lost In Books is more than just a multilingual kids' bookshop. We're a public haven and safe space for women. We're a language exchange hub for people of all ages and cultural background.
I would have loved a place like this growing up here. If you’re looking for books to expand a small someone’s world, or to give to an organisation that supports refugees and newly arrived migrants, check them out! It’s a new favourite!

Featured Artists
Emele is a Tokelauan (Te Kaiga o Fagatiale, Nukunonu, Te Kaiga o Koloi, Uea) Fijian (Kaideuba, Navua) woman & multi-disciplinary storyteller working across live performance as an actor, writer, director, producer & facilitator.
Maria Tran is a community, cultural & development practitioner with celebrated skills in digital storytelling and film-making. Her writing skills have derived from scriptwriting for award-winning short films such as “Hit Girls”, “Hot Bread Shop” and “Happy Dent”, and playwriting. Maria has joined writing rooms for film and television.
Zarlasht Sarwari is a PhD candidate in the School of Social Sciences and Psychology at Western Sydney University (WSU). Her research explores Afghan Identities in Australia with a particular focus on negotiation of hybrid identities, transnationalism, nationalism, racism, immigration and multiculturalism.
Meet Elizabeth, a Sydney based composer and founder of The Music Box Project. Elizabeth will be hosting two Fairfield Found Sounds workshops at Lost In Books from 22-23 January.
Lillian is an internationally acclaimed bilingual storyteller. She is the Forked Tongues Multilingual Storytelling Lead at LOST IN BOOKS.
Safdar Ahmed is a Sydney based artist, musician and academic. He is an Illustrator and Director at Refugee Art Project.
Jemma is a children’s music specialist, puppeteer and performer with a great passion for musical play and storytelling. She is our Sound System (Early Childhood) Artist at LOST IN BOOKS.
Harri Harding is an award-winning composer, performer and educator. He is the Wandering Books and Sound System Lead at LOST IN BOOKS.
Marcus Whale is a musician, singer and composer from Sydney. He is a Sound System Mentor at LOST IN BOOKS.
Ida Warhol is a singer and producer who creates celestial visions wrapped in intricate harmonies, melodious harp plucking and a bucolic warmth. She is our current SOUND SYSTEM Musician in Residence (2019 - 2020).
Huy Nguyen is a Sydney-based visual designer. With a background in architecture, experience in publication and marketing, Huy knows a thing or two about creating striking imagery that demands attention and delivers the message.
